*  According to a citation in Albion's Seed by David Hackett Fischer, the ten names that occured most on late 18th Century militia muster roles were:  John, William, James, Patrick, Robert, Thomas, Charles, Samuel, Edward, and Joseph.  The almost total lack of Patricks in Russell County(3 occurences) lends weight to the hypothesis that the inhabitants were almost entirely from the North of England and the south of Scotland, rather than from Ireland, as many family legends relate.  However, Edward is another name that appears infrequently in Russell County(27 occurences) and is almost entirely English.
