The records show that William Monk, private, Stevenson's Company, Ferguson's Battalion Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States Army, enlisted August 5, 1862, at Lebanon, Virginia. By consolidation of organizations, January 15, 1863, this company became a part of the 16 Regiment Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States Army, and the Soldier became a private of Company A, the regiment. He was captured October 9, also shown as October 10, 1863, in Fayette County, Virginia, imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, transferred to Rock Island Barracks, Illinois, January 22, 1864, from which place he was released June 16, 1865, on Oath of Allegiance to the United States. His description at that time is shown as follows: Age 33 years, complexion dark, hair dark, eyes grey, and residence as Lebanon, Russell County, Virginia.
