Army Valley District July 30, 1862 General Order No. 72 At a General Court Martial convened by Virtue of General Order N0. 55 Head Qr Valley District June 16, 1862, were arraigned and tried as follows: Private William Short Co. I 37th Regt. Va. Vols. Charge Desertion Specification In this that the said private William Short Co. I 37th Regt. Va. Vols. being regularly in the Military Service of the Confederate States, did on or about the 12th day of May 1862 on the march of General Jacksons army from Staunton to Franklin Va and back to Stribling Springs, did desert the said service knowingly and wilfully. Findings of the Specification - Guilty of the Charge - Guilty Sentence The court sentences the said private William Short Co. I 37th Regt. Va. Vols. to forfeit four months pay, wear a ball and chain for thirty days, and be publicly repremand at dress parade in the presence of his Regiment. The proceddings, findings, and sentence in the foregoing case are approved and will be carried into effect, with the exception of wearing ball and chain for thirty days, which is remitted on account of the difficulty of carrying that part of the sentence into execution at this time.
