CATLETTSBURG, Sept. 9. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the residence, for Calvin Jones, 100-year-old Civil war veteran, who died early Monday morning at his home on Louisa road following an illness of four months. Rev. Alley Vaughan will officate and burial will be in the Catlettsburg cemetery.
The oldest resident of this city and one of the oldest in Kentucky, he would have been 101 years old Oct. 16. Born in Wythe county, Va., the son of Lewis and Lucinda Paynter Jones, he came to Catlettsburg 40 years ago from Huntington and had lived here since that time.
He entered the Confederate service as a young man of 22 in 1862 in Russell county, Va. He participated in several major battles and went through the entire engagement at Gettysburg without suffering injury.
Jones is survived by his wife Mrs. Martha Jones, 82; two sons, Grover Jones of Red Jacket W. Va., and Roscoe Jones of New Boston; a stepson, Ray Stapleton of Catletsburg, a stepdaughter Mrs. Minne Fillinger of Huntington, W. Va., 21 grandchildren nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
