Camp near Abindgon Oct the 18th 1863
Dear Parents
The present affords one the oportunity of writing you a few lines to inform you that I am well Cummings is all well and do sincerely hope when these few lines comes to hand they will find you all well. Cummings come to us on the eavening of the 15th we took the train the same day at Petersburg and start to this plase we arrived at this plase this morning about daylight.
We was expecting to meet the yankees hear but their was none hear they have fallen back the las acount they was at or near Bristol some thinks they will aim to fight us somehwhere their but it is very uncertain but if they do I think we have got men enough to whip all the cavalry in east Tennissee. I dont like to hear tell of yankees comeing in this part of the country for the reason they are doing so much damage to the government, and again I like to hear tell of them comeing for this reason that I like to see some of our old spculater skeered till they look like the could almost crall in an augerhole and again I can visit this part of the country the oftener by it. you may think this imprudent chat but you can look over it but the fact is the speculaters are doing the Confederasy more harm than the yankees. you all sent word by Cummings for me to write and I have been writing and writing every since we lef rapidan River and havent got but too leters since and they was both out of date when I got them. I got one while I was at Petersburg that Martha wrote dated the 26th of last month
your affectionate son
C. H. Gilmer
