Reynolds Letters Civil War Letters of Russell County
Isaac V. Reynolds to His Wife

Rockingham County Va
July the 30th 1863

Dear Wife

I take my pen in hand to write you another letter informiing you that I an not well by right smart I have been suffering great pain with my jaw & teeth. I have had the scurvy on my teeth for three weeks, which has nearly rotted all my gums off to my jawbone. I have never suffered as much in my life. My teeth all ached day and night.

I am some better now. I are near Harrisonburg staying with the broke down horses of our Regt. I havent been with the company since we left Penn. I got a pass to the hospitle but I never went to it. I stayed at a house while my money lasted but now I havent enough to mail a letter. We havent been paid off since we left winter quarters & money is very scarse with our boys.

I havent rec'd but two letters from you since I left home. One of then I got in Penn. If you write to me, I dont get your letters. Our brigade has been fighting this week over at Culpeper, C. H. I havent heared from our company how they came out. I expect some of them are killed or wounded though, as usual. We have seen hard service since we came to the vally.

I dont care how soon we leave the vally for the northwest, our old command. There is a talk of our brigade going back and take its old command. If they do I am coming home a while, if I am living and well. I want. to come home worse than I ever did before. I am completely worn out here, eating, light bread and beef We have no cook vessells with us & we have to get the Dutch to bake our bread & when it comes it is the same evrytime, baked in a dirt oven. I will quit for this time for my head and jaw pains me so I cant write much longer. Keep them boots for me untill I send for them. If I was well I could write you a long letter, but I will try and do better when I write again. I havent anything of importance to write now. I want you to write to me as soon as you get this, delay no time. I will write again soon.

I wrote to you from near Luray Page County Va. Let me know how you are getting along and how the regt are doing. Live me the country nuse also. So nothing more at this time. Write soon as you get this, be carefull in directing your letter so I can get them direct in this manner. I.V. Reynolds, Harrisonburg Va. Thats enough. Nothing more only remain

Yours untill death
I.V. Reynolds
