Isaac V. Reynolds to His Wife

Frederick County Va
Camp Near Opaque
September the 15th 1864

Dear Wife

I take the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to inform you I am still in the land of the living. Hoping these lines may find you all well.

I have nothing or importance to write at this time, only I am in a fair way to get to come home. I have sent up a detail and if it comes back approved by the right authority you may look for me shortly. I want you to have some winter clothes made by the time I get home. I want a jeans coat & pants. Have some lining for a coat wove against I come home, for I cant stay long.

We dont get but 30 days to go and come in, therefore we cant stay long at home. The boys are all getting details to go home for horses. We are lying near the enemy, skirmishing with them every day nearly. Today we have been idle for the first day in several weeks. The enemy broke through Johnson's lines day before yesterday & captured about 100 of our infantry, a North Caroline Regt.

Commence feeding your hogs right off. Cut the corn off & feed stalk & all until the mast falls. Take good care of things at home and save all ruffness you can for you will need it.

I will close for the boys are waiting on me I will be at home the last of the month if nothing happens. Have me a big pot of beens cooked.

Yours truly,
I V. Reynolds
