Isaac V. Reynolds to His Wife
Camp Comfort Dear wife As I have an opportunity of sending a letter I thought I would do so, although I havent anything to write of interest. We have a great dele of sickness among us at this time, not much in our Compny though, only one case of fever I believe is all. There has been two deaths here this week, they are gone to attend the burial of one while I am writing this evening. We are still at our old encampment which is geting very filthy on account of the mud and old beef bones and filth. We have had some very hard weather here for several days. The ground has been covered with snow for six or seven days, some four inches deep. Today is the most plesant day we have had since I left home. I dont know when I will leave this place, but some time between this & the first of May anyhow. I dont care how quick myself. I want you to take good care of my mare from now untill I come home or send for her. Feed her good and rut once a day at least. We are living on half rations at this time. We can eat in two days whats allowed for five. The other three days we make the poltry such as chickens turkeys geese & ducks get up & cluck. Occasionaly a potato hole or cabag hole suffers by the hand of the soldier. Write to me as soon as you receive this and let me know how you are geting along, give me the news of the country also. I am well at present hoping when these lines come to hand they may find you well.
Yours truly |
