Obituary of Joseph S. Colley

September 20, 1912

Capt. Colley Dead.

Captain Joseph S. Colley died in Dickenson County a few days ago of pneumonia fever.

Captain Colley was one of Dickenson County's most prominent citizens; he was a captain in the Confederate army, and in 1879 he was elected a member of the House of Delegates from Wise and Buchanan counties, which counties at that time composed one legislative district and during the session of 18797-8 he secured the passage of an act forming the county of Dickenson out of parts of Buchanan, Wise and Russell. He was again a candidate for the House of Delegates last year in the district composed of Wise, Dickenson, but was defeated by a few votes by Hon. John W. Chalkley. Captain Colley was one of the most active men of his age in that county.
