June 4, 1928 OBITUARY OF LEWIS PRESTON COOPER
Lewis Preston Cooper was born August 9, 1840 in Russell Co., Virginia and departed this life May 31, 1928, being 87 years, nine months and 22 days at the time of his death. Mr Cooper enlisted in the Confederate services at Lebanon Virginia in Co. E, 23rd Virginia Infantry in 1862 but was later transfered to the Cavalry in Co., E, 23rd Virginia Calvary, and participated in a number of skirmishes along the border of Tennessee and Virginia during the early days of the war and in the battles of Chickamuga in Tennessee and Saltville, Virginia. He was paroled at the close of the war at Lebanon Virginia. Mr. Cooper came to Missouri about fifty years ago and finally settled in Kansas City. Of his past life the writer knows but little but is informed that Mr. Cooper was a butcher by trade.
On October 17, 1915, Mr. Cooper came to the Confederate Home and moved into one of the cottages where he and his wife lived until about three years ago when his eyesight failed him completely, he was moved to the Dispensary where he has been since. Mr. Cooper is survived by the following relatives, Annie Cooper, wife; Mrs. F. W. Butler daughter of Kansas City, Lilburn Cooper, son of Higginsville and one son in California whose name we do not have.
To those who are old residents of the Home the memory of this man's garden on cottage row will live on, for long after he was ill he maintained that garden in good condition and when failing eyesight made it impossible for him to find the commissary we yet remember him with an indominable will, trying to wait upon himself as he had done all his life.
