Death of Rev. Noah Cross
Rev. Noah Baldwin Cross, aged 77 years, 5 months and 13 days, died at his home at Great Cacapon, Nov. 14, 1914. The burial occurred at Mt. Nebo Nov. 16th. Mr. Cross had a slight stroke of paralysis about two and a half years ago, and had been rather feeble since that time. The final stroke came about 10 a. m., Saturday, Nov. 14, and he died about midnight on the same date.
Mr. Cross is survived by his widow, who was Miss Mary J. Simmons before her marriage; two daughters, Mrs. Susie Alderson of Washington, and Mrs. W. A. Iden of California; and two sons, Mr. B. S. Cross of Great Cacapon, and Mr. W. S. Cross of Martinsburg. Six of the children are dead. Out of his father's family of fourteen children, only three are living. Rev. Robert Cross of Virginia, Mrs. W. L. Jessee of Virginia, Mr. Benson S. Cross of Missouri.
Mr. Cross had been a resident of this section of the country for about fifty years, was in the Union Army four years, was married in 1886 and preached about 30 years. As a preacher, Rev. Cross succeeded especially well in evangelistic work, and made several tours through parts of Virginia and Tennessee as an Evangelist. His preaching had been practically given up lately on account of ill health.
He had however told the writer on several occasions that he was ready to die. While he had preached many funerals himself, it was his desire that no funeral sermon should be preached at his death. According to his request services were brief, but they were well attended, and many of his neighbors talked together of his long and useful life.
W. M. MAIDEN.
