DEATHS AND FUNERALS

EASTERLY - John E. C. Easterly, one of the oldest men of the county and a well known and highly respected citizen of Cleveland, died quite suddenly at his home here Tuesday. Mr. Easterly had been in feeble health for a number of months, but until a very short time before his death was up and on the streets as usual. Deceased was born in Russel county, Virginia in 1834 and lacked only a few days or rounding out eighty-two years. His father was a Methodist preacher and was formerly for many years a member of the Holston conference. Mr. Easterly moved to Bradley county thirty-one years ago and settled in the community of Black Fox. He became one of the most influential men in that community, always being a leader in matters of religion and education. The splendid school work that has grown up and developed in that community is largely due to his efforts and to those of G. T. Denton of this city, Calvin Denton of Black Fox and a few other far seeing men of that community. For the past ten years Mr. Easterly has resided in Cleveland. He was one of the pioneers in this section in the nursery and fruit business. For many years deceased was a faithful member of the Methodist church and a devoted christian.

The funeral occurred this Thursday morning at the M. E. Church South, and was in charge of Dr. W. S. Neighbors who was assisted by Rev. J. W. Browning. The pall bearers were R. H. Hawk, I. C. Wooten, J. M. Bennett, George Hain, Isaac Hall and W. B. Rucker. Burial was in the City cemetery. Deceased leaves a large family consisting of his widow and ten children with a number of grandchildren. He was the father of fourteen children, four of whom preceeded him to the great beyond. He was married twice.
