Francis Marion Steel, Who Died Recently at Age of 104 Years Was Married Three Times

Francis Marion Steel, a native of Tazewell county, who died at his home near Lebanon, Russell county on Tuesday at the age of 104 years leaves to mourn their loss eleven children, thirty-two grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren.

During the War Between the States Mr. Steel served the whole four years with the Twenty-Ninth Virginia Regiment or Brewsters Company made up of Tazewell county men.

He was born in Tazewell in the fall of 1820, and had spent his entire life in Tazewell and Russell counties. He was married three times - the first time to Mary Jane Steel, and to this union four children were born, Barbara Alice, deceased; Mrs. James Brewster, of Richlands, Va; Mrs. B.C. Wilson, of Marion, Va; and W.H. Steel, of Richlands, Va. He was married the second time to Miss Margaret Griffin and of this union George W. Steel, of Gero[..]stown, Tenn., was the only child.

His third wife was Miss Nancy Jane Sykes, who bore him seven children - A.C. Steel, of Trenton; I.B. Steel of Holston, Va; Mrs. J.V. Campbell, L.A. Steel, C.R. Steel, Mrs. C.P. Williams, Mrs. J.E. Fields, all of Lebanon, Va.

At the end of the War Between the States Mr. Steel was converted and joined the Methodist church to which faith he has been true ever since.

[Note: it is more likely that F. M. Steele was 94 years old at his death, as it is fairly certain that he was born in 1831.]
