During the War Between the States Mr. Steel served the whole four years with the Twenty-Ninth Virginia Regiment or Brewsters Company made up of Tazewell county men.
He was born in Tazewell in the fall of 1820, and had spent his entire life in Tazewell and Russell counties. He was married three times - the first time to Mary Jane Steel, and to this union four children were born, Barbara Alice, deceased; Mrs. James Brewster, of Richlands, Va; Mrs. B.C.
