PONCA, Neb. (Special) - Cummins Gilmer, 89, Ponca's last Civil war veteran and perhaps the only veteran of the southern army in this section of Nebraska, died of pneumonia at his home here Christmas night.

Mr. Gilmer was born near Lebanon, Va., in 1844. When he was 18 he enlisted in Company G, 29th Virginians, Picketts division, under General Robert E. Lee. He served in campaigns in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and fought at Cold Harbor, Five Forks, and Petersburg. The day before Lee's surrender at Apomattox Mr. Gilmer was captured but was released the next day.

Mr. Gilmer came to Nebraska 46 years ago. He is the father of six children, three sons, Lee and Will of Ponca, and Cummins of Los Angeles, Cal., and three daughters, Mrs. Miles Nelson, Mrs. Lee Gleason and Miss Sarah, all of Ponca.
