Taps For An Old Confederate Soldier

Another old Confederate soldier is dead. This time Lafayett Gilmer, who resided two miles south of Lebanon answered the last roll call and is now at rest on the other side with Lee, Jackson and Stuart, and other heroes who thrilled the world with their victories in battles against many times their number.
The end came Wednesday night of last week after a brief illness on pneumonia, and the burial took place Friday in the Gilmer cemetery two miles east of Lebanon.
The deceased was 77 years old and was prosperous, charitable and religious.
Russell county never sent a braver or a more willing soldier to the battle field that Lafayett Gilmer. He belonged to the 37th Virginia Infantry, Jackson's Brigade and participated in sone of the hot battles in the eastern part of this state.
A wife and two children survive him.
