April 3, 1942 A NATIVE RUSSELL CONFEDERATE DEAD
James Gray, though he had not lived in Russell for half a century about, kept in touch with his back home people by reading The Lebanon News each week. Tuesday, March 31, 1942, he died in the Gray community near Johnson City, Tenn. He was 93 years old, and was the last Confederate soldier in Washington county, Tennessee.
He was born in Russell county, the son of Harvey Gray, of St. Paul, and Nancy Dickenson Gray, of Castlewood.
He entered the confederate army at the age of 14 as a rookie mounted soldier and served in Virginia, W. Va., Maryland and Massachusetts.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Verdie Gray; one daughter, Miss Alice Gray; one stepson, Charles Erwin, and one daughter, Mrs. Ray Murry.
