June 17, 1870 DEATHS
Died, at his residence in Russell county, Va., on the 23d day of March, 1870, Mr. JOHN W. HACKNEY, in the 32d year of his age.
His disease was pulmonary consumption. He was confined nearly four months during which time, his sufferings were very severe - so severe, that he would often say that "if it were not for his wife and little children, he would rather die than be in so much pain." John, like many others, had failed to seek religion while in good health; but, during his illness, he was very penitent, and was earnestly engaged in prayer during several weeks before his death, and when told by a friend that he was dying, he said, "well, I hope I will be better off." - These, his last words, afford some consolation to his bereaved friends. He leaves a widow with seven small children, father and mother, with many other relations, in mourning. May the good Lord bless and protect his little children. R.
