Obituary of John P. Hamilton

PIONEER CITIZEN DIED AT MERIT

J. P. HAMILTON, CONFEDERATE VETERAN AND LEADING CITIZEN BURIED FRIDAY.

Charley Lytton was here today en route to his home south of the city from Merit Where Friday he attended the funeral of his father-in-law, J. P. Hamilton.

Mr. Hamilton died Thursday afternoon about 5 o'clock at his home in Merit after a long illness. The funeral was held at Merit, Rev. L. L. Naugle of Floyd conducting the services, assisted by the Methodist pastor at Merit. The burial took place at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at Farmersville.

Mr. Hamilton was 74 years of age. He was born in Tennessee but moved to Virginia and lived there until he was grown. He joined the Confederacy and fought through that struggle. He moved to Merit among the first locating there and continued to reside there. He joined the Methodist church at an early age and was a leader in that denomination.

He leaves five children, Mrs. Mary McCallon, Floydada; Mrs. Martha Lana; Mrs. W. H. Wright, Lone Oak; Mrs. Virginia Lytton, south of this city, and Will Hamilton, who lives at Merit.

No better man ever lived than Mr. Hamilton, and there are many that mourn his death.
