| March 25, 1937 Two Veterans Die in Russell; Only 5 Remain G. L. Kiser, 96, and Lilburn Hurt, 92, Succumb
CHILHOWIE, March 24. - The thinning ranks of Confederate veterans lost two members with the death Monday morning of George Lee Kiser, 96, at his home near Lebanon, and the death Sunday night of Lilburn Hurt, 92, at his home near Honaker.
Mr. Kiser was among the group of soldiers from that section who, although with Lee at Appomattox, did not surrender, but returned to their homes. He joined the Southern army early in the war, and was under the late Captain H. H. Dickenson of Lebanon, in Company A, 29th Virginia Infantry, General Pickett's division, Longstreet's corps.
Only Five in County
The deaths of Kiser and Hurt reduced the number of Confederate veterans living in Russell County to five. They are: George Williams and S. P. McCloud of near Lebanon; Henry J. Robinson, Swords Creek; Haskew Ball, Blackford, and B. F. Francisco of Moccasin.
Funeral services for Mr. Hurt were conducted Tuesday at his home near Honaker.
Last rites for Mr. Kiser will be held today at his home, Dr. J. R. Johnson officiating.
Mr. Kiser was a son of the Rev. and Mrs. Elihu Kiser. He married Eliza Jane Browning. Mrs. Kiser died in 1930. Her nine children survive: Mrs. Stephen Smith and Mrs. Houston Mays of Honaker; Mrs. Adar Garrett, Carterton; Mr. Walter Holloway, Havre de Grace, Md.; Mrs. J. T. Stinson, Walter and George Kiser, all of Lebanon; Arch Kiser of Castlewood, and Albert Kiser of Hampton.
