Obituary of James D. Kiser

July 16, 1909

To The Memory James D. Kiser.

Carterton, Va.

This community was grieved to learn of the death of Capt. James D. Kiser, of Carterton, which occurred on June 29th. No death in the county of Russell has caused a deeper gloom of sadness to be cast over our people than the death of Capt. Kiser. He was between sixty five and seventy years of age. He married Miss Winnie Artrip who survives him with three children, two boys and one girl. He was a man of noble impulse and spent the latter part of his life as a christian and contributed largely of his means to all denominations. He was a successful business man from early manhood up to the time of his death. He invested largely in real estate, adding farm to farm until he rounded up the Kiser estate, one of the largest in the country. Unlike most wealthy men he was plain and unassuming. He lever lost sight of the poor, especially his tenants and neighbors as hundreds of them can testify to his benevolent hand. Capt. Kiser will be missed not only by the family but by the whole community.

The funeral services was held at the old family grave yard on the 30th, where the remains of this grand old veteran was laid to rest.

We extend condolence to the heart broken family.
