Death Notice of Andrew Jackson Porter

November 27, 1906

MAN MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD

A. J. Porter is Shot to Death at His Home in Scott County.

AN UNKNOWN MAN COMMITTED CRIME.

Victim Was Sitting With His Family When Murderer Entered - Rob-robbery Probably the Motive.

(Special to the Herald.)

Gate City., Va. Nov 26. One of the most atrocious murders ever committed in this county occurred near the Russell line Saturday night.

Mr. A. J. Porter, aged about 65 years, was sitting with his family by his fireside when there was a gen-opened the door when an unknown opened the doro [sic] when an unknown man sprang by her and saying to Porter "Your time has come," shot him in the breast. Porter fell, and Mrs. Porter grappled with the murdered. Tearing himself loose, the desperado shot Porter twice in the back, then fled, and no trace of him has been discovered. He is described as a low, heavy-set man.

It was known that Porter, who was very well-to-do, usually carried a large amount of money, sometimes as much as a thousand dollars, in a bill-book in his breast pocket. The book is missing, and it is the general belief that robbery was the purpose of the murder. Mrs. Porter does not know whether he had any money at the time or not.

The murder has created a deep sensation and men from the eastern part of the county coming to court here today talk of little else.
