Our town was saddened Saturday at the home going of Dr. J. C. Speer. Dr. Speer had been in declining health for the past year. He was well and favorably known in Southwest Virginia where he spent the major portion of his life. The deceased was 87 years of age and served in the Confederate army from 1861-65. The funeral was held Monday at his residence at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. J. B. Thomas, of Bristol, assisted by Revs. Bailey and Musick. The remains were taken to Coeburn where interment was made in the cemetery at that place.
