  • Russell County Website for the main page to the Russell County, 1860-1865 pages, which includes this census and an extensive site devoted to the Civil War in Russell County.

  • Anatomy of a Census is the top page of a section that includes scans of the census.  Also included are example scans that show the letters and numbers as written by Isaac Vermillion.
  • The Graphs Galore page is the starting place for summaries of population statistics, including total population from 1790-1900, and  a census by census summary of the agricultural statistics for the county, including livestock.
  • The Slave Schedules have been added. The owner's names in the regular census are linked to the slave schedules where appropriate.

Welcome to the third version of the 1860 Russell County Census Online.
These pages are now part of my Website on Russell County from 1860-1865. The other major section of the site is on the Civil War and it's relation to Russell County, look for biographies, pictures, and more on this "side" of the site.
The organization of the census is designed to make finding an exact relative as simple as possible. The largest page size is around 70K, which should load completely in under 20 seconds. However, large tables can cause problems with certain browsers and computer combinations. Please e-mail me if you have any problems.

I have tried to exactly reproduce the census as it appeared on the microfilm. I have not edited it in any way, except the following:
1. I have added an "L" after the household number for the town of Lebanon. This allowed me to run queries in Microsoft Access without duplicates.

 2. For the few entries that were completely obscured I have entered "xxxxxx". This only occurred 10 or 15 times and will be fixed in a later edition.

 3. I have not transcribed the second column of the census - family number. In all cases this was the same number as the household number.

 4. I have changed the method used to indicate school, married, or illiterate from a slash in a box to actually spelling out the words. This was done for readability purposes.

The format of the census and the index are mine and they are copyright, Gregory Lepore, 1997. I don't mind if you copy several households or even a few pages, but please do not copy the entire thing. If you feel generous, send me a few dollars for my effort. If I find out that anyone is abusing the census by downloading the entire thing, then they will not be allowed access to the site in the future.

Otherwise, enjoy!
