Camp near Petersburg Oct 3th 1863
Dear Sister
It is with pleasure I seat myself this beautiful morning to drop you a few lines to inform you that I am well hopeing when these few lines comes to hand they will find you all well. We arrived at this plase yestarday morning on our way from Zolicoffer to this plase we lost several of of the 29th I think their is very near one half of her absent without leave. I was supprised at Cummings going off without leave I told him to not go but but he seemed fully determed to go. I reckon Cum thought he would go by and take dinner anyhow I would of like to of come by home myself but I was determined to not go without leave for I knew it would be no satisfaction to me and I dident think it would be any satisfaction to my folks Cumings just took a notion that that was his best chanse to get home & he thought he would make use of it. Their is no dishonor in a person going home & staying too or three days but I know when Cumings told ma & Pa that he had no furlow it had some impression on their feelings but they heed not be uneasey about them punishing Cum for I dont think they will be troubled. I think the boys pursuaded Cum to go with them Tell Cum being as he has [...] the blockade I want him to bring me something to to eat. I feasted very well while we was in Tennisee we could get as much good fruit as we wanted and we could get good dinner & as much sider as we could drink most any where for fifty cents but down hear it is just as fare the other way you cant get half as much as you can eat their for a dollar. If Tennissee is full of yankees & bushwhackers I believe I would rather stay their as hear.
I wouldent care if they would keep running us from Petersburg to Tennissee & back if such long rides. Tell Charles M Browning to write to me I havent heard from him since I cant tell when I hear that he had a very sore foot I reckon cum is chargeing about his horses being gone it is a great pity them too horses was stolded if cum hasent started back before this letter gets their you send my old store boots by him if James nor Caty hasent wore them out
I would like the best in the world to have a pair of boots this winter for fear I weary your patience I will quit I am writing this letter polkbury juse send me some chees by cumings if have or can get them so nothing more at presint your Affectionate Brother
To Martha & all the rest
Charles H. Gilmer
Give my best respects to all inquireing friends especialy to the fair sex
