Camp near Winchester July the 25th 1863 Dear Uncle I received your very interesting letter this eavening & do hasten to reply I was very sorry to hear that you was unwell, your letter found me in very good health. I am very sorry that you havent been with us. Their has been a very still time with us since you & General Fields left us. you are such a strong secessionist I would like to have you hear to help fight for her we are in a plase now wher their has been a heep of fighting done & I wouldent be supprised if their wasent right smart more done before cold weather they old Lee is comeing comeing out & the blue bellies are after him just like pinaunts the day we come hear we met 3,500 yankees going ont to Richmond I tell you their was a right smart squad of the blue bellies. Charles their was several of our boys come from Gordonsville to this plase barefooted and now their feet are sort & swelled they dont grumble them men would as soon die as to give up this country to the yankees. The paper says the yankees sware they will whip the rebble out then whip old England for reveng, dont you think they are talking rather large I think again they whip the rebbles out they will give out trying England Charles you mus excuse me for not writing more Charles H.
