Gilmer Letters Civil War Letters of Russell County
Camp Petersburg Sept the 14th 1863
Dear Sister
After a long and tiresome march I will try to answer your verry kind letter that I received several days ago. We started on our march the 8th of this month and landed hear yestarday eavening. We marched from twelve miles below Orange C. H. to Richmond & rode on the cars from their to this plase. The rodes was very dry and dusty. I do not know where we will go from hear we may stay hear awhile but I dont heardly think we will. we did think we was going to Charlston South Carolina but I am in hopes we wont go their & their was a talk of us going to Tennissee though we just guess at it we dont know where we will go to We are now at what what the boys call home. if they will just let us stay hear a while Cummings is well & I am well with the exception of a very bad boil on my hip which bothers me very much about marching Marth you all seemed very anxious to hear of me & Cumings getting to see Rieves we got to see each other at last while we was in Orange. Cummings first went to see Rieves then Rieves come to see us. I did intend to go to the 37th before we left but I put it off too long. We have got down into the pines again I think it is much healthier above Richmond than it below for this reason the ground is higher and the water is better Cumming sends howdy to you all but he would rather be their to see you and take dinner so I remains your brother
