Greenbrier River Pocahauntus Co Va Aug the 30 1861 E. D. Gray Russell Labanon Va Russell Co August the 2th/61 Mr. John E. Gilmer Dear Sir I seat myself to answer your kind letter dated July the 27th. I can assure you that it did me a great deal of good to hear from you I had been looking for letters from you and Dave for a long time. When I heard of your flight from laurel hill I didnt know but what some of you was killed or perhaps all taken prisoners but when I heard that you had all landed safely in Monterey my heart leaped for joy. I havent any news mucth to write at this time more than you have heard only there is three or four more volunteer companies about to be made in russell so I think that russell will act a good part in this struggle I think there are some as brave men in Russell as there is any where in the south. [...] that after this war is ended their names will share a hall of resplendant glory around the pages of its mournful history. I rest fully assured of one fact that there are some as sweet girls in Russell as there are any where else not only in the south but all over the world. I saw one at church the other sunday that would do to hitch to and I saw some that was as ugly for it some that was as tough as tripe and twice as natural. Ed I wish you would hurry and kill all the yankees and come home I would like to see you now. Ed tell Reeves that if he dont write to me that I will come out there and thump him. Tell him that I have been looking for a letter from him for a long time and that he had better write. I want to you write to me often and give me all the news you dont know how much good it does me to hear from you. Tell all my friends howdy for me especialy Reeves Excuse this ill compose and badly written letter for I have so much to do that I havent much chance to write. So no more at present but I still remain your friend Ed Gray Edward D Gray |
