Gilmer Letters Civil War Letters of Russell County
Greenbrier River Pocahontas County September 10th 1861
Dear Uncle,
I seat myself to write you a few lines by the request of Rieves to let you know that our regement left here to join Lee at huttonsville Rieves had ritten a letter to Martha but had ceiled it before we had orders to leave. I haveing been a little unwell and the Capt thought I had better not try the march for he said it might be a forced march. I think I will be able to go on to the regment in a day or three Rieves is well and he started off from here very cheerful they took nothing with them but their blankets and provision which was hauled they expect to have a battle shortly they may be a fighting there now but if they are our regment is not in it for they just started yesterday evening and have not had time to get there the distance being about thirty miles If Lee is successful in whiping the enemy at hutonsville our baggage will be taken on to them it is thought that the enemy has left Cheat Mountain to join the force at huttosville if they have and Lee is successful our baggage will be taken across Cheat instead of going by huntersville Rieves could not take any paper and ink with him it may be that he can get pape and ink when he get there if he can you will hear from him shortly but if he can not get paper it may be some time before you hear from him Bolovar is here and if we get any particular news one of us will write and let you know what is going on as Rieves wrote to Martha yesterday. I will bring my letter to a close you must write to me tell Hays to write I would like to hear from the people in that part often but I hear from you whenever Rieves gets a letter.
Say no more at present but remain
your nephew
