Orange County Virginia October 5th 1863
Dear sister
      I receive your kind letter yesterday and was glad indeed to hear that you was all well at home and to hear that ginney had cum home I was out on picket yesterday I hear some canonading but ever thing is quiet know I was on the river where I could see yankees at any time but we are not allowed to fire on each other I suppose hayes and Cummings has been in a fight in tennessee and come out safe their regiment is now in Lynchburg. Martha when I wrote to you last we was expecting a fight out hear but their are no indications of a fight nowe the yankees are supposed to bee fawling back I think it doubtful whether we have a fight out hear this fawl or not though we may.
Martha I want you to tell me where Charles M Browning is and what he is doing. and when anything goes wrong at home I want to know it when you write again tell me how much wheat you had tell pa to not sell diners colt without he has neede for the money and to not take less than one round thousand dollers for if he will holde onto it he can get it verry handy
Tell ma & pa howdy & all of the children orders just now come to bee ready to move at any time nothing more but remain your brother W. R. Gilmer
