Gilmer Letters Civil War Letters of Russell County
Camp Orange County Va Dec 4th 1863
Dear Parents brothers & sisters
      I am happy indeed to inform you all that I have come through one more battle safe and sound we had a battle on the 27 of last month below hear we was on a march our whole Division had passed alon the rode but our brigade the yankees fired on us as we was marching along the rode they took us on a surprise but did but little damage we lost one man in our compy I dont know whether he was killed or not William A. Kilgore is his name. The yankees have gon back across the river and we are in camp once more but I am afraid the yankees will not let us alone yet a while
I am afraid they will have to try us again before they quit for the winter. We sent a detail this morning to the battlefield to pickup guns James A Gilmer went on the detail. Lafayett Gilmer was slightly wounded in the hip he is gon to the hospital he is not hurt bad tell uncle Sam that he need not bee ueasy about him it wasent the wound that gether that they sent him off for he had verry sore eyes besides.
James Henritzy has got with us but he left his things at orange Court house he will send for them tomorrow if he can get a pass.
You want to know what I want if I get the socks you sent to me I dont want want anything but some pants for I havent had the socks on that you sent by Smith I have a good round about and a good overcoat all I need now for the winter is some pants & a pair of boots and I can do very well without the boots just so I get the pants it will do for I can get shoes hear when nobody else can for they have all got larger feet than I have and the shoes are generally small
I would have written sooner to you all but this fight has been on hands for along time and we have not been in any regular camp for along time and I hope you all will excuse me for not writing sooner as you see I have not had the chance to write. Now I will bring my fiew and imperfect lines to a close by signing my name Your son & brother
