Camp near New market April the 6 1862 Dear friend I received your kind letter the other day and red it with much pleasure. I am well at the present hopeing these few lines will find you and find you well and all the rest of our friends and connection. We had a bully fight on the 23 of las month and los a good many men out of our regiment our company lost in killed wounded and taken prisoners is sixteen among our prisoners was Mathias Lee Charles W. Johnston William Barton and others that I will not mention. our Regiment & the 13 Regiment and two yankee Regiments had a race to a rock fence we beat them to the fence and the way we pilde them it was not slo and at the same time they piled a good many of our men our company went in the field with 35 men and come out with about 19. Our Capt was wounded he lived about a week afterwards george is gon to take him home. I expect he will get their before this letter. I suppose you are out with the malitia it is about as good as you could do its no disgrace to fight in the malitia I under stand that hase is cumming out hear bout I dont know whether its so or not. I am cumming home when my time is out if I can get off but I dont know whether I can get off or not. You said that you have had sum bulley times since I left I have had sum bulley times two but not such times as you have had. You said you could tell of somethings tell me some in your next letter for I would like to hear something good as I havent heard anything good in a long time. I hear canon evry day nearly Ashby is in our rear with some artilery he takes around or two with the yankees evry day he keeps them back considerable. Write soon and give me all the news in Russell and tell Hayes to write often and you must write more tell all my friends to write to me.
