Winchester Virginia
June 16th 1863
Dear sister
       I will try to write you a few lines this morning to inform you that we are at winchester once more we got in the bounds of winchester too or three days ago and have been canonading with the yankees untill yesterday morning they left hear we took about four thousand prisoners besides several negrows. we marched from fredericksburg to this place since I wrote to you last and we cooked three days provision last knight and have orders to march I expect we will go to maryland old millroy left hear in a hurry yesterday morning tell uncle sam that I havent seen Lafayett yet he is still at the hospitle I havent seen hayes & Cumming yet and we are know along ways apart for they were at the junction when I left fredericksburg we had a hard and tiresom march to this place and have to march yet it looks like they intend to march us to death before they quit but I stand it mighty well our regiment wasent ingaged in the fight we was detailed to guard the reserve artilery and their fore we wasent ingaged in the fight and I wasent sorry of it. The loss was small on both on both sides but the yankees loss was the heaviest. They have got our russell cavaldry out hear saw severel of them the other day I dident see Clay but I saw severel of them I saw Barnet Reynolds and a great many more that I knew we got all of millroys wagons horses and ever thing that they had we got a great many wagons and a great many horses but I dont know how many some say that we got two hundred wagons. one regiment of our brigade all got horses and mounted them selves but I dont know whether they will let them keep their horses or not Martha I am must writing to let you know where we are we are traveling so much that I am afraid you will not get my letter and if you get it I am afraid you cant read it. You pleas excuse bad writing selling and mistakes for I have written this in a hurry they keep us marching so that we hardly have time to write When we leave hear we may go to maryland and we may not I cant tell where we will go martha I will have to bring my few and imperfect lines to a close
