June 9th 1863 Camp Near Culpeper court house Dear sister I seat myself this morning to drop you a few lines to inform you that I am well and hope thes few lines will finde you all well we came to this camp yesterday eavening and will remain hear the ballence of this day we are now below where we had the cedar run fight we can hear canon most any time we can hear canon this morning in the direction of fredericksburg I havent seen Hays & Cum yet I heard that they was orderd to fredericksburg and on their way their we are traveling very near in the direction that we was when we flanked manassas before but I dont know where we are going now we may be going to manassas and and we may be going to the Valley I am in hopes they will take us to the valley but I am afraid they will take us to manassas and I dont want to go their I would rather fight them at fredericksburg I got a letter from Hayes the other day him and cummings are both well they are going to fredericksburg or at least I heard that they was Tell uncle sam that I havent seen Lafayatt since I have bee out hear nor heard from him he went to the hospitle sick from vasination James A Gilmer sends his best respects to you all Martha when you write tell me how the boys are getting along with their corn and whether they have got the dam fixt or not and tell me what George Wms is a doing and how he is getting along and tell me how Charles is getting along catching deserters I was glad to hear that Sarah was going to school but I dont see how you are to do without he at home the male will start in a few minutes tell all the children howdy for me and ma & pa tell maryan & alley houdy for me and kiss alley for me Martha I will have to bring my letter to a close and I will write soon again if I have the opportunity and from the way the canon is araning it is unsertten when I will get to write a gain Martha whe you write tell me how many calves you have got and whether you are getting plenty milk or not Martha I have nothing to write so I will have to brin these fiew and imperfect lines to a close you will please excuse this bad writing for I am in averry much of a hurry so nothing more but remain your brother William R.
