Lynchburg Va July 7th 1862
Dear Pa
I once more seet my self to write you a few lines to let you know that I am not well at present but hope you are all well at home. I am sorry to inform you that I am in the hospital at las and for the first time but I am still able to walk about and take care of myself and hope in a few days to bee able to go to my regiment.
I am also sorry to inform you that we lost our colonl at richmond but nun of my company has been hurt yet that I can hear of. On our way from the valley to Richmond I was taken with a bad bowel complaint and it urn on me so long that I got so week that I could nont keep up with the regiment and I stoped at a private house and stayd a week and then went back to Scharlotsville and it was such a bad place I could not stay their and I started to my regiment and they stoped me at richmond and sent me to the hospital at this place the hospital that I am in is a verry nice one their is not much sickness in it their is no fever in the hospital that I am in. John W Fields has been with me all of the time he has been sick two but he is able to walk about and he is coumpany for me we can walk about where we pleas but our fair is fad. Pa I cant tell you anything about for we hear one thing one day and another the next that is we hear one thing one day it contradicted the next day but we have been whipping them all the time and taken a great many prisoners and a large quantity of artilery before I left richmond I was at Richmond three days and they brought some artilery and prisoners in evry day and the wounded I never saw as many before all the hospitals at richmond is nearly full they are sending some of the wounded hear. the last account I had of my regiment it hadden beein in action but was under fire ofe of Capt duffs coumpany was killed nathan easterly. that is all that was killed from Russell the last account. Pa you need not bee uneasy about me if I get bad I will let you know if I get so I cant wate on my selfe I will write or get someboddy to write for me. I want you to write to me and let me know how you are agetting along. I got your last letter you said you had Ben Blackwell plowing for you tell me about your wheat & give my best respects to all enquiring friends when you write tell me about hayes & Cum direct your letter to Lynchburg Va. I will try and write a gain befor I leave this place. So nothing more but remain your affectionate son W R Gilmer
