Monterey virginia Aug the 13 1861
Dear Pa,
       I will write you a few lines this morning to let you know that Edmonson is no better He has a bad bowel complaint that has weakened him [...] till he can heardly [...] he has not eat anything for several days but bread and water and it goes rite through him and dose him no good we will march this eavning or in the morning for the Aligany mountains and we will have to leave Edmison & David Cowan here for neither of them are able to walk maby some of us will stay with them if I can get to stay I will write tomorrow but it is in question whether any of us can get to stay [...] with them. Edmison says he suffers verry much at times and some times he is easy maby he will get a house some where for Edmison & Dave but george has bin out and he says he cant find any house Edmison says he will try to get some body to write for him and will rite him self as soon as he gets able. I dont know whether for you to be uneasy about Edmison or not but he is toliblery lo. I said we was going to the Aligany mountains but I dont know but I expect we will go there I will write again as soon as we get stationed write to edmison direct your letter John E Gilmer Monterey highland co Va
