Gordonsville August 13th 1862 Dear Sisters I seet myself this morning to inform you that I am well but verry tired we have been down about culpepper court House. I am glad to inform you that I went through the battle without getting hurt the battle was on the 9th Aug. We lost one hundred and 1 men killed and wounded out of our Regiment. George R Cowan was wounded but not bad flemming burk was killed Capt duff was killed John belcher was wounded and dide James Shell was killed and a great many more that I will not mention. This was a hard battle our regiment lost more men than we ever lost before in any battle our Company only lost three wounded George Cowan William Short & William Lowdermilt neither of them was wounded bad. I seen some thing in this battle that I never saw before and what do you reckin it was it was to see the yankee cavaldry charge and it was nice they charged in fifty yards of me it was the niscest seen that I have witnest since I have been in the war they was all dressed alike and they come just as hard as they could ride but we piled a good many of them they done no damage we turned them and they run through their ranks. I got me an improved gun in the fight after the fight was over I went back on the field and got a lode of guns and took to my company. Its a sight to go on the field after a fight and see the killed and wounded some dying some mourning & gronig and crying for help. I got a letter from hayes this morning him & Cum is well, Martha wrote a letter to you and Sarah the other day but did not get to send it you will get to see our battle in the papers more correct than I could give it to you so I will bring my badly written letter to a close So nothing more but remain your affectionate brother W.
