August the 4 1861 Monterey highland co Virginia Dear Parents brothers & sisters I seat myself this beautiful morning to inform you that I am well with the exception of a cold but that is a general complaint through the whole Company Capt Hunt is a going to start home in a few days he is agetting lo Hawkins Thompson is verry lo it is doubtful whether he gets well or not James P Jessee dide on the first I went to his buring There is some few sick in our Company but they are not dangerous I dont think there is but one that is dangerous he is Hawkins Thompson and he may get well There is more sick in Mcelhenys Company than there is in ours but they are all on the mend there as been right smart rain here for a few days everything looks green the people here are harvesting I seen some cutting wheet yesterday the oats here is green yet We have got tents at last Our tents are allowed to holde ten men but eight in a tent is a plenty Edmonson is a little unwell to day he was taken last night with a bowell complaint [...] unwell two Edward Culbrson & Olivar fricks [...] they come here day before yesterday fricks son has not got up yet I understand that Bolivar Cowan Frankling Howard & James A Gilmer is on the road here Kindrick is also on the road for this place There will bee preaching here to day at eleven oclock We here that the yankees are aleaving [...] He also here that [...] of ohio is aleaving from [...] we cant tell General Lee was here the other day he is a big stout hearty brave looking olde man. our company seems to be a very well sadisfide some is cooking some is laughing and talking some playing cards some one thing and some another we have to keep our guns as brite as a doller our guns are in spected every three or fore days we [...] them with lincy [...] an fine coles I am looking for a letter from some of you to day and I am looking for a letter from George Williams This army has ben mighty healthy there has been but five deaths for so many men to bee to gether lying out on the ground exposed to all kinds of wether some without a blanket they just ly rite down on the necked ground.
