Greenbrier river September the 17th 1861
Dear Sister
      I received your kind letter last Sadurday and was glad to hear that you was all well with the exception of pa and I hope he is better by this time and I was glad to hear that you all had so much wheat and I hope I will be permitted to come home and help you all eat some of it I told you all in my last letter that we was going to general Lee we cooked our provision as I told you started to general Lee and [...] and come back the next We will start in the morning for petersburg it is about sixty five or seventy miles from here. They have had us running from one place to an other for about a week and some of our men are about run down there was but twenty of our men that was fit for dieuty this morning I myself am able to perform all the dieutys envolveing up on me and I thank god for it I have not bin on the sick list since I have bin in the army but there are some [...] taken down it looks like my time will come next but I hope I will not get down while I am in the army but it looks like we will all be taken down all that sick [...] was sick with the fever and the sick as they get able will be sent to monterey [...] I know whether I wanted flannel [...] slips I want flannel for if we stay in the mountains it will be very cold [...] but I hope we will get out of the mountains to winter I tolde you that all [...] was sick with the fever but there are a great many that is on the sick list that was just wore out James A. Gilmer [...] the fever but he is getting well bolivar is awriting a letter to uncle Billy know [...] is mending rite fast for the last day or [...] William N. Fletcher dide last Saturday [...] you say you cry evry time you write to me and I cry evry time I read your letters and when I write I look over your letters and it makes me cry and I can hardly write you said maby you would send me some crape I can not get it here but I dont know as it is necessary for me to have any of it here if I was at home I would wane it two but you can send it if you want me to have it I dont know that we are going to petersburg but bob sais we are and he sais we will start in morning just direct your letters as bfore untill I tell you where to direct them if we go to petersburg I will write to you as soon as I get there as it is a getting late and we are crowded in our tent I will have to bring my badly written and badly spelt letter to a close. give me respects to all enquiring friends excuse my backly written and blocked letter if you please and I will try and go better the next time as I was in a hurry your affectionate brother W.
