Camp near greenbank pocohuntas co va Sept. 27th/61 Dear Brother & Sister I received your kind letters on the twenty fourth and was glad to hear that you was all well at home. I am not rite well to day myself. We have bin running from one place to an other for a good while we are within about fourteen miles of greenbrier river we started for petersburg the day I told you that we was a going to start. We travailed one day put and stayed all night and our col got orders to stay there untill he got further orders and we stayd there three or four days and we was orderd back in this valley but how long we will stay here we cannot tell. You said for me to write as soon as Mr fuller got here so that you would know whither I got all of my things but we are mooveing so much I dont know whether he can find us or not. Hayes you wanted to now how our sick boys are agetting they are all or most all on the mend. James A. Gilmer is getting rite smart. He has left greenbrier river and gon over in the valley where dave and george are. They have bin ditching at greenbrier river since we left there. They are expecting fight there shortly. It is araining verry hard this morning and has bin raining evry since early last night and it looks like it will rain all day. The most of our men put up their tents in the bottom and the water got under them they are mooveing their tents this morning. I expect you all have bin uneasy about me for not writing sooner but we have bin running from one place to another so that I had no chance to write you all must not get uneasy about me for they march us so much that we have no chance to write. tell Nancy & Wilson Browning that I got their letters and tell Nancy that George W. Smith has bin under the wether evry since the the retreet as I have not much news to write and it is raining and we are crowded in the tent I will bring my badly written and badly spelt letter to a close so no more at present but write soon write often Marth J.
