Letter of Elijah Ferrell, Hiram Howard and William H. Howard

A letter written by Elijah Ferrell, Hiram Howard and William H. Howard from Monterey, Highland County in July of 1861.

Letter 1 describes the retreat from Laurel Hill.

Elijah Ferrell enlisted in the 37th Virginia Infantry at the age of 55 years in July of 1861 to serve for one year. He was discharged in January of 1862 by reason of disability. William H. Howard enlisted in the 37th Virginia Infantry at the age of 43 in July of 1861 and was killed at the Battle of Kernstown in April of 1862. Hiram Howard, a brother of William H. Howard, enlisted in the 37th Virginia Infantry at the age of 43 in July of 1861 and was discharged in August of 1862 upon the expiration of his term of service. He subsequently served in the 13th Battalion Virginia Reserves.
