Two Survivors 16th Virginia Cavalry

N. C. (Nat) Dickenson, 16th Virginia Cavalryman in the war of the sixties, was in Lebanon from Castlewood last mid-week and in conversation with him it was learned that he and Lilburn Garrett are the long survivors of the 16th of sixty-seven men. Dickenson belonged to Company A, McCausland's Brigade and was on the firing line in the battles of Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Ft. Republic, Hatcher's Run and Five Forks and thru the hell of many other hotly contested battles.

In the battle of Winchester the Confederates numbered 11,000 and General Sheridan had an army of 43,000. All day the battle raged, the Confederates losing in killed and wounded more than 2,000 men while Sheridan's forces suffered more heavily losing between four and five thousand men. The battle started next day with about 9,000 Confederates facing the huge Yankee army. Confederate reinforcements were rushed from Richmond and thrown into the battle.
