October 23, 1925 Mayor J. W. Bausell Attends U. C. V. (Bristol Herald Courier)
Among the visitors in Bristol yesterday for the annual reunion of Confederate Veterans was J. W. Bausell, mayor of Lebanon, Va., and a former member of the 21st Virginia Cavalry, Confederate Army. Despite the fact that Mr. Bausell is as active as a much younger man and takes a keen interest in the affairs of the day.
An interesting account of his first visit to Bristol is told by Mr. Bausell. He first saw this sector in the fall of 1863 when his forces were engaged with those of Burnside. At that time there was not Bristol and Goodson, Va., consisted of a store run by William James, and one or two houses. Even then there was a railroad here, the Virginia and Tennessee, extending from Knoxville to Bristol.
The growth of Bristol was emphasized by Mr. Bausell, who has made a number of visits here during the past years and who has had good opportunity to observe the progress of the city.
Mr. Bausell was for some time during 1889, publisher of the Lebanon News, which had a good circulation in Bristol. He is at present commander of the McElhaney Camp, Confederate Veterans, which had an enrollment of 380 when he was elected, but which now numbers but 32.
