CONFEDERATE REUNION
At Honaker last Saturday the Veterans of the Civil war held a reunion, which was attended by the remnants of the "Lost Cause" of Russell county - those who have escaped the ravages of disease, and have not been called on by nature to give back her own. The re-union was well attended - some 350 veterans being present, with their children and their sons and daughters children.
The pleasant and unpleasant memories of '61 to '64 were recalled by the gray haired vets, and incidents of the various battles retold, and the dying and smoldering fires rekindled in many hearts. As incident of the meeting, which is somewhat out of the ordinary, was the appearance upon the grounds of the Republican candidate for Congress from the Ninth district, who had gone to Honaker, we are informed, as one of the speakers of the occasion. But it is said he was not permited to address the body. We are "curious" to know if the Republican orator and candidate would have told the Confederate Veterans of Russell county why he supported the Crumpacker bill to reduce the South's represenation in the Federal Congress; why he has never raised his voice in favor of a reduced tariff; why he is silent on anti-trust legislation; why he is silent on the clauses in the Republican platform, which re-enfranchises the negroes in the South; why the mines, mills and other industries in his own
country have been forced to shut down and deprive a great many of a means of livelihood; what the mechanics and miners and railroad men, who have been idle all summer, will do when he faces the empty dinner pail this winter.
He might have told these old rebels, some of whom are farmers, why they have to pay more for American-made mowing machines in American than in foreign lands, and many other articles of necessity which could be enumerated.
A remedy is at hand for the cure of some of these evils which have been fostered by a Republican administration.
