Aaron Lilburn Hurt, i.d. by Louis Daniels
Aaron Lilburn Hurt served in Company G of the 29th Virignia Infantry. He was born in 1844 in Russell County and enlisted on 3/27/62. He was hospitalized twice in Richmond in 1864, the first time with diarrhea and the second for typhoid. He was listed as a deserter in December 1864.
He was born on 4/27/44 in Russell County, the son of Burgess Hurt and Paulinea Ann Howell. His first marriage was to Louisa H. Ball on June 12, 1869 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Children: John W., Virginia Belle, Salina, Henry Walton, Andrew Fullen, Charles A., Thomas Lucien, and Rosa M. His second marriage was to Mary Catherine Mize(Snavely). Children were: Ollie Gay, Quincy Eller, Chyde Shofner, and Lillian R. His third marrige was to a Confederate widow he met at a reunion. Apparently he enjoyed going to reunions and went whenever he could. The lady was from Texas. They courted for a while and he traveled down to marry her and bring her back to Virginia. She got as far as Norton, VA and decided she didn't care for the mountainous topography. She left instruction about where to ship her belongings and returned to Texas.
Aaron's occupation was as a stone mason and a farmer. He learned the stone mason trade from his father. He purchase land on Lewis Creek shortly after the Civil War. The farm house burned after his death on 3/22/37 in Russell County. He was one of the last few veterans alive at the time. He is buried on the Lewis Creek property.
