Mrs. P. C. Blackman

Rock Hill, South Carolina

Dear Mrs. Blackman:

This is in reply to your letter of 28 February 1952, herewith returned.

The records show that one Hezekiah Bays, Private, Captain McFarlane's Company Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States Army, enlisted 7 Apr 1862 at Lebanon. The company muster roll for 30 June to 30 Nov 1862, dated 30 November 1862, shows him absent, sick. No later record of him as been found as of the above name organization.

The records also show that one Hezekiah Bays, served as Private, 6th Battalion Confederate Cavalry, Confederate States Army. His name appears on a petition "addressed to the Secretary of War by members of McFarlane's Squadron Virginia Cavalry (Companies E and F, 6th Battalion Confederate Cavalry), requesting transfer to a Virginia organization," dated 7 April 1864 at Camp on Beaver Creek, Floyd County, Kentucky. No later record of him has been found as of the 6th Battalion Confederate Cavalry.

The collection of Confederate States Army records is by no means complete and failure to find the entire record of Confederate military service does not indicate necessarily that an individual did not serve during some period not covered by the records.

Sincerely yours,

WM. E. BERGIN
Major General, USA
The Adjutant General
