Card 7 Abingdon Va Dec. 5th 1862 Gen. F. H. Smith Dear Sir I am taking some steps towards being appointed Commandant of the Post at this place. You will greatly oblige me by writing to the Secy of War, & stating what you may think would help me in getting the appointment. I would like to have a Commission at least as high as I resigned last June. I am unable to active field duty but have so far recovered from the injury I received at the Battle of Port Republic, as to do Post duty. I raised the first company for the war from my county (washington) & was Captain of it till May /61 when I was appointed Lt. Col. of the 37th Va. Vols. I was at Laurel Hill & in the North West till Dec. /61 when my Regt. was ordered to Winchester Va. I served under Gen. Jackson in the Valley Commanding my Regt at Kernestown & at other places during the time. I was elected Lt. Col. in April /62 & resigned the later part of June. I hope the Secy of War will recommission me & assign me to Post duty at this point. I consider a recommendation from you important as to my qualifications &c. And I have no doubt but you can by stating the circumstances have me appointed. I remain yours truly, R. P. Carson |
