Card 3 12 August 1953 Mrs. Ernest Lynch Route No. 2 Castlewood, Virginia Dear Mrs. Lynch: This is in reply to your letter of 13 July 1953, herewith returned. The records show that one John H. Salyer, private, Company A, Regiment of Mounted Rifles, which subsequently became Company A, 22nd Regiment Virginia Cavalry (also known as Bowen's Regiment Virginia Mounted Riflemen), Confederate States Army, enlisted 16 June 1863 in Russell County, Virginia. His name last appears on a Register General Hospital, Winchester, Virginia, which shows that he was admitted 23 July 1864. This collection of records is by no means complete, and failure to find the entire record of Confederate Military srevice does not indicate necessarily that an individual did not serve at some period not covered by the records. Card 6 No 13 Army of the Confederate States Certificate of Disability for Discharge James Salyer a private of Capt. Henry F. Kindrick's Company (B) Baldwin's Sqauadron of Partisan Rangers was enlisted by Capt. Wm. M. Baldwin of Baldwin's Squadron of Partisan Rangers at Nickelsville Scott. Co. Virginia on the 4th day of Aug. 1862 to serve three years. He was born in Scott Co. Virginia is 44 years of age 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion blue eyes dark har and by occupation when enlisted a farmer. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty sixty days. Station Saltville Va Date May 19th 1863 H. F. Kendrick Capt. Comg Company I certify that I have carefully examined the said James Salyer of Capt. Kendrick's Company, and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of an old fracture implicating the ankle joint which incapacitates him to a considerable extent for walking, and lumbago from injury of the spinal column.
