Card 25

I herewith tender my resignation as Captain of Company "I", 37th Va Regt. I offer my resignation for the two reasons following. 1st My Company is a mere skeleton, having been reduced by death, & otherwise to fifteen men, only three of whom are present, the others sick or wounded at different hospitals.
2nd. I desire to join or raise a company of Partisan Rangers as I think I can render more efficient service in that capacity than I can as commander of a squad of infantry.

T. J. Smith Capt.
Co. I, 37th Va Regt
