Letters of Lorenzo Dow Fletcher, Cummings G. Fletcher, and George R. Cowan

Four letters from Lorenzo Dow Fletcher to his wife and one letter by Cummings Fletcher and George Cowan.

Letter 1 describes Fletcher's recuperation from an unspecified illness at the hospital at Emory and Henry University. Written February 15, 1864
Letter 2 covers the Maryland Campaign in the summer of 1864. Written July 15, 1864.
Letter 3 describes the rout of Confederate forces at the battle of Moorfield, WV. Written on August the 16th, 1864.
Letter 4 mentions the difficulty in obtaining stamps and paper and the upcoming President election. Written August 26, 1864.
Letter 5 is written by Cummings G. Fletcher and is also signed by G. R. Cowan. Written September 19, 1861.

Lorenzo Dow Fletcher served in the 22nd Virginia Cavalry. George R. Cowan and Cummings B. Fletcher both served in the 37th Virginia Infantry under Stonewall Jackson. Lorenzo survived the war, as did Cowan, who was wounded at Cedar Mountain in 1862. Cummings Fletcher died as a First Lieutenant on 5/8/62 at McDowell.
