Camp Comfort near Salem
Roanoke Co. VA. March the 13, 1863

Dear Brother

I am well this morning I hope these few lines may find you all well. I landed here safe and found the boys all generly well, half of this regiment started to the border of virginia yesterday morning them companies that livs down thare some of our boys went Morgan Gilmer went with them. Orders was red for the Russell and tazwell Companis to stay here in Camp only them that wanted to go on an expedition they will git of the cars at Wythevill and go through tazwell and down to logan I don't now how long they will be gon, the officers has promis to pay me $60 dollars of your money when they draw and meby all of it they say that we will draw shortly. I want you to rite if I must take part of it if I cant git all.
Monk has all so promist to pay when he draws his money. The snow at Wythvill was shoe mouth deep and along the side of the Alleghany mountains it looked to me like it mite be half leg deep it is verry cold here to day.
